Make the export readable

Read a WhatsApp chat export beyond the text file

An exported WhatsApp conversation is useful to keep, but a long text file can be hard to follow. A chat export viewer presents the transcript as a conversation so you can read the exchange in order and find the messages that matter.

What is inside a WhatsApp TXT or ZIP export?

A TXT file is the conversation transcript. It contains text entries such as messages, sender names, timestamps, and notices included in the export. You can inspect it with a text editor without a dedicated chat app.

A ZIP archive packages files together. Depending on how the conversation was exported and saved, it may contain the transcript alongside media. Extract the archive to see what is actually there. A viewer can only work with the messages and files it receives.

How to open and check an exported conversation

  1. Keep a copy of the original export before editing or extracting anything.
  2. If you have a ZIP archive, extract it and locate the TXT transcript.
  3. Open the transcript in a text editor and check the first and last dates.
  4. Use Find to search for a distinctive word or phrase from the exchange.
  5. For a conversation layout, choose a viewer that supports your export format and review its data-handling policy before uploading.

From reading the transcript to sharing the useful part

Preserve is designed around a conversation view for WhatsApp TXT and ZIP exports. The workflow combines message search, date navigation, a first-and-last-message selection, and a theme preview.

This is useful when you remember a phrase but not the date, or when you want to share one exchange from a much longer chat. Keep the original transcript as a reference, then review the selected page before sharing it.

Why are photos or messages missing from the export?

A text-only export does not contain the media files themselves. The transcript may mention an attachment even when that file is absent. If you need media, check whether it was included in the export and whether the files were saved alongside the transcript.

A missing date range may reflect an export limit or content that was unavailable when the file was created. Compare the exported transcript with the chat in WhatsApp. A viewer cannot recreate messages or attachments that are missing from its source file.

Reading a chat is different from restoring it

A chat viewer helps you read an exported copy outside WhatsApp. It does not turn a TXT file into a WhatsApp backup, restore that conversation inside the app, or retrieve deleted messages. If you are moving phones, use WhatsApp’s supported transfer or backup instructions instead.
